WELCOME Center for Marine Materials
The Center for Marine Materials is an organized research unit within the Ocean Engineering Department under the guidance of Dr. William Hartt and Dr. Stephen Lipka. Undergraduate and graduate courses are offered in the areas of corrosion, materials science, and energy storage. Facilities include the on-campus materials laboratory and the new, ocean-side marine corrosion laboratory, where flowing natural seawater is available. The new facility has significantly upgraded the Center's capabilities for future marine corrosion education and research.

Historical areas of the Center's research encompass broad aspects of marine corrosion and prevention, with continuous specific assessment of offshore structural materials, cathodic protection and calcareous deposits, corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete, corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of corrosion resistant alloys, integrity of paints and coatings, and environmental degradation of composites. Research areas also include electrodeposition, rechargeable silver-metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries as well as state-of-the art double layer capacitors.
