Florida Atlantic University set its first official speed record in the
International Human Powered Submarine (HPS) races in June 1991.
In 2005, FAU competed in the 8th International Submarine Races,
returning to the competition after a long absence. The team was
awarded second place for “Best Overall Performance”; won the
“Smooth Operator” award for the team with the most consistent
performance, successful troubleshooting and ability to race the
course; and placed third for overall speed.
The students made significant improvements, but still raced with the
original sub that was used fifteen years ago. So the time has come
for FAU to build a new boat, and that’s why the FAU HPS team needs
your help.
We, the class of ’67, challenge you and every other OE class to
support the FAU OE HPS team in the International Submarine Races.
Contributions are needed as soon as possible so that they are
available to help with FAU’s entry in 2007. A win in the races next
year would be great for our collective reputation and will reflect
alumni support for one of the many remarkable innovations from the
OE program at FAU.
Best to all of you,
Class of ’67 – Dick Asher, Barry Bates, Lou Brown (in memory),
Tom Dade, Tom Metz (almost a 67er), Dee Pendley, Russ Smith and
Rikki Wells
