Dr. P. Edgar An currently is an assistant professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at Florida Atlantic University, working on basic/applied research and development for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). He received both his M.S. and PhD degrees in electrical Engineering from University of New Hampshire in 1988 and 1991 respectively. From 1991 through 1994, he was a research fellow in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Southampton University, UK, working on the European Prometheus Project (predecessor of IVHS). His major research interests include multi-sensor data fusion algorithms for AUV navigation, command and control issues for intelligent autonomous vehicles, no nlinear modeling and control using neural networks and fuzzy-logic methodologies, algorithmic development for high-dimensional modeling with noisy and correlated data, and he has published more than 30 journal and conference papers in these areas. His current research work includes AUV sea-state dependent self-motion characterization, motion compensation and navigation in shallow-water environment. He is a member of AIAA, Space Automation and Robotics Technical Committee, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, International Neural Network Society, IEEE, and also a reviewer for the IEEE SMC, IEEE Fuzzy-Systems, International Journal of Systems Science, Automatica, and International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
